Just what should be expected in a springtime landing at ~68* latitude? I've read the CO2 snow is up to a foot thick in the region of the landing ellipse. Some of the area has thin repeated layers of residual dirt/ice or rock/sand which appears to be left from a stacked snow/dirt origin. Of a couple HiRISE photos the surface is far from flat, with patches of polygons, and only a couple of flat topped rocks, entirly different than the layered terrain of Meridiani. We may need to see the region first hand to see the regular finer layering.
The greater concentration of water ice and dry ice should be a good lesson in geology. It may be unique in that Earth does not have the potential of a combined layered mix.
I'm looking forward to a few new mysteries during the year.

Maybe RW can paint a Toulouse-Lautrec picture about this new mission to help in the landing- and I am sure the scene will be different than we've been watching from the rovers. The spacecraft has been travelling-long. Art can be of assistance, in spirit, and science.
Safe travel log for Phoenix, hopefully.
