Now in the last song we saw the man get on his knees. That should be me. Life is a bitch. We all have our pain. All I got to say is we all hurt. Good to be here brothers.

We are family.

Lets don’t get too mushy. Brian the smooth flat dust in Victoria is an anomaly. If you want a void with dust fall do not let us see an area of deposition. You Geo types make me puke. LOL.
That should stir it up.

Thanks for the info so far.

sol 98 color animation of cloud changes:

Yuk.

Unfortunately, the 256 color GIF limit wreaks havoc on the images - especially in the subtle stuff going on in the top of the picture.

I am looking around for a cheap ( read free ) program to convert files to a movie format that Flickr supports ( AVI WMV MOV MPEG 3gp ) but no luck so far.

The imagej plugin that I found requires Quicktime7 - which requires XP or Vista - which I don't have.

If any of you know of a free movie maker program that supports Windows 2000, please post location information here.

Thanks dx! I found and downloaded the latest version of Antechinus Animator. A fantastic tool! I may buy it after the 30 day trial.

Here, for the world, is the very first Phoenix movie of clouds moving across the Martian sky.

I haven't white balanced this version, so the sky is "blue" - but not really!

Bummer. The brain-dead comments parser stripped out the embedded player linking code. Here is the Flickr page for the video. Just click on the "play" button.

Welcome, glad you found something of use.

That is neat and cool and clear too!! If 20$ US does that kind of work, its worth it. Good luck with it.

thanks for the movie.

Before I go into stupid mode some basic weather.

We can tell the height of the clouds by the size of the elements.

Image one from Hort.

Early morning stratus-fractus from radiational cooling and residual moisture post storm. This montage is priceless. Cloud heights between 300 and 2500 feet. Why so Large? I got to give myself some room.

Image Two is from NASA. They always keep the good stuff for themselves. This is Cumulus-Humulus or fair weather cumulus for the, ”Rock folk.” These clouds form in the afternoon as thermals rise to the boundary layer of cold Vs. real damn cold.

Image three is mid level clods between 8 thousand and 15 thousand feet. We can clearly see the size of elements are smaller. Victoria Crater, Winston Image

Image four is the classic, “High wispy clouds with cloud heights between 25000 and 40000 feet. NASA image.

You would think all i do is look at clouds, yep.

Question 1: Please, explain to me how snow can be possible when you have a low atmospheric pressure.

Question 2: What you probably see is frost, not snow. Are you sure?

Question 3: Do you know that the second image shows dust devils, not snow storms?

Damn Zve,

Could you not have picked a more simple name like Fred.

Question 1: Please, explain to me how snow can be possible when you have a low atmospheric pressure.

Pressure is not the issue. You are knew to this Forum. There was a man that use to post her that said every thing is about temperature pressure and time. His name was Henry. I suggest you read his post.

In this case it is temperature. The lower the temperature the less moisture the air can hold.

Pressure is irrelevant.

Question 2: What you probably see is frost, not snow. Are you sure?

No, We have seen frost at the phoenix site. I have posted an MRO image I said was a snow storm. This is when we must add the human component. If we look at Earth images that show us a restriction of visibility in context we must ask why. You can not have a restriction of visibility without something restricting visibility. If we have a total obstruction then we must ask why?. In this case snow is the only answer.

Question 3: Do you know that the second image shows dust devils, not snow storms?

You need to learn how to post images and to flag anomalies. See Hort

Where is your Daddy?

We are preparing for fishing tomorrow, so please, be patient...

If what you are saying according to 1. it may happen only after it gets very cold... it may not happen until the sun starts to set fully on Phoenix website...

I personally expect to see more frost with time and more clouds, but I don't expect to see snow...

Fred,
Pressure is a key variable. Because of the low atmospheric pressure the Martian atmospheric column can only hold less than 100 precipitable microns of H20 with the amount dependent on the temperature. This will of course freeze out over the polar winter but the main source of snow is carbon dioxide snow as the atmosphere freezes.

Horton,
Great movie at reply 65. The subtle stuff at the top of the picture looks like a great example of Wave Clouds which form at the edge of the polar cap and in the lee of obstacles including craters. The MARCI weather report has reported some dust storm activity at the edge of the cap so there may be a bit of dust there to give the yellowish effect.

sol 100 clouds at sunset movie:

You don't want to know how much work this was.

I laughed and laughed when I finally created frame 1 of this 10 frame animation. Of course thats what clouds "look like" at sunset!

The camera was pointing a little to the west of the sun as it set.

I was very unhappy with my first version of this movie and knew a flat field correction had to be applied. But what flat field image was available?

Then I realized that if I used the average of all the frames to correct -- and then added the average back -- after enhancing the brightness range of the corrected images - then the results should be interesting...

The down side is the horrible pixilation resulting mostly from NASA's 12 to 8 bit clipping and JPGification of the image.

OK Phoenix team, give us your version with original 12 bit data.
