Hi Mann

I see the "bloom" you are talking about. Hope they do some close-up images. But won't hold my breath

LWS,

Let me get this straight. You see blooms on Mars. Do not go on UMSF. This is a nice safe place for you.

Now here is an odd one. It seems that Phoenix mave have indeed tilted about 2 3/4 degrees to wards the south within the last 25 days? I had to rotate the sol 28 image by that much to align them for the animation.

Regarding the tilting...

Do you think it might be the force of the arm pushing and scraping the ground that's nudging the lander?

Hi All

Here's another colourized image from sol 66 this time, showing lots of tiny spheres left after soil had dried out on instrument deck

Yes Mann

I really can't understand why no one has commented on the numerous small spheres that are seen on the rocks and the soil surface. They don't look like ordinary soil particles. Why haven't they done OM's of these or at least taken close up RACs of them which can give similar resolution to the MER MIs?

Winston, mann,

I think I saw a good image of a berry and never got a comment, any thoughts?

Hi Fred

It looks like it could be one of the very small Phoenix berries that are essentially the same colour as the soil or slightly darker. It however does not seem to have the characteristics of a meridiani berry. It could be that it is indeed covered in mud.

The "berries" in my reply 328 seem to have been left after the soil dried out from soil spills left on the PHoenix deck. There are so many of them that I think a closer look is warranted. They might turn out to be just soil particles on closer examination but there is a possibility that they might not. I don't think there is any harm in checking them out in the now extended mission which seems to have a renewed fervour for exploring any aspects of life that could be examined.

The SOD thing has always been mysterious, The dust seems to form spheres, and structures as though the dust itself were alive, or maybe what the dust sticks to is alive. Spheres, strings, circles, branching shapes, are in all the images.

sol 68 RAC 3D of scoop press and scrape on trench far wall:

I couldn't get imagej to work on the 10 year old Windows 98 SE machine available to me, so this StereoPhoto Maker version will have to do.

The subsurface pressure wave seems to have "reflected" and pushed out the wall to left of the press -- although it may bave been pulled forward when the scoop was retracted.

I can't figure out where all the "extra" soil came from in the bottom of the trench.

Did the scoop push back the wall and then take a "bite" of it?

What was the objective of this sequence? A study of the layers in the soil?

Of course, I see lots of interesting "thingies" in the excavated soil -- but that just means my holiday is not over yet.

Hello Hort, nice image,

Looks like they want to see what happens to the dirt above the ice layer. Maybe they are looking for frost in the dirt above the ice layer. I guess this is a good way to do it. Scarp it out and look for changes. Nah, that’s too simple.

Winston,

Draw some arrows for those that do not know what a "hyphal rope,” is, like me.

I have found that communication is key. People read this stuff.

Hi Fred

That was just a facetious statement to some extent.

The "hyphal rope" is the white area at the lower right that looks like a "rope" at the edge of a raised area. It is probably a trick of light and shade but its smoothness in outlining what must be an irregular area as compared with the similar white area to its left suggested that it might be a bit more than a trick of light and shade to me.

The important areas to me are the numerous sphere like features at the surface.

Re "people read this stuff" I have come to the conclusion that perhaps only 10 to 15 people read anything that I write here and those people usually comment if there is anything I write that they don't understand.

Not true, Winston.

There are about 10 to 15 that regularly comment on what you write here, maybe, but you are on the Worldwide Web, my friend.

I think you would actually be shocked to discover how many people are lurking at this site.....keep up the good work.
