A Piece OF Lumber

The rover Opportunity got an image of what looks like a big piece of wood.

It's the same thing as the flat rocks around it, except it is at an angle to the ground.

It doesn't look like the flat rocks around it. In fact, it doesn't look flat at all. What angle is it to the ground? It looks like a beam.

Is it natural that straight black line showed on background?

I mean, it seems to me quite regular.

The regular straight black lines on the background are quite obviously artificial. It is certainly a defect into the transmission of the image.

When I look at the original image I posted, I see the beam rather quickly. But it seems you think it is very much like all the other features in the image. So why does it stand out so prominently?

The parallel lines or formations behind this object are more interesting to me.
