Etched terrain stereo image

Here's a stereo image extending from Viking Crater through the etched terrain to Victoria Crater. It seems Opportunity will be traversing over a series of parallel ridges on it's way to Victoria.

Anaglyph:
733 Kb: 2.0 Mb:

Crosseyed method:
265 Kb:
1.6 Mb:

It seems that Erebus (aka Albert) lies on one of these rideges. However, instead of cutting into it, it seems to be conformable with the ridge topography. This would imply that the crater predates the ridge and whatever erosive process created the ridges is also exuming Erebus.

aldo, the "parallel ridges" are a 3D artifact caused by stretching of one of the images to make a 3D pair.

What is strange is the south "wall" of the crater seems to be a "trench".

After seeing this stereo pair, my bet is that Oppy will bypass Viking and Voyger and is on it's way to Erebus as we speak...

Thanks for pointing that out, Horton. So instead of resizing the smaller image up, I should've resized the larger image down? I'll try it again tonight.

aldo, I would suggest using the imagej turboreg plugin to create the companion image. Use the affine transformation ( 3 points) and set the points manually.

I have use this plugin to create 3D companion images when the camera / angle / position differed dramatically.

I have registerd panoramas of MIs with pancam images, for example, with good success.

So, where (on Mars) is Oppy San Diego now?

My bet is he's flying by an Erebus ( pronounced air-bus )

I tried to redo it but had the same results. Comments on another forum indicate the artifacts are related to subtle movements in the camera platform. Basically, the MOC camera isn't ideal for stereo imaging, especially in areas of flat terrain.

Hi aldo,

It's true that the venerable MGS is a "wobbly" platform, this is the one and only cause for a "wavy" anaglyph like this. It's not true however for all MOC stereo pairs as the author in the other forum implied. You were just unlucky with this pair. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done about it although it can be lessened to some extent by slicing one image into small strips parallel to the waves and skewing each strip to match the other image. This is tricky, time consuming, and will only reduce the wavy effect.

Better luck next time.

Yeah, jdub, rotten luck with these images. The stereo images you have on your site are pretty good, without any artifacts, so MOC is capable of producing great results under the right conditions.
