John

I forgot to mention above that they are totally distinct from the traces left on some of the horizontal surfaces some of the instruments by small pebbles (that they indeed resemble in some way).

Their uniformity also suggests that they are not mere traces of pebble movement in a matrix of fine dust on the wheel surfaces.

I haven't looked exhaustively at similar images of wheel surfaces but I've look at several of them and I think it is fairly easy to distinguish between the white marks left by inert scratches on the wheel surfaces (there are several examples that I can post later) and these filaments.

They also resemble some of the objects imaged by the phoenix imager but are obviously very much larger.

The gif in #338 is not very helpful. It shows completely different sides of the wheel, it does not show that anything is not sticking to the wheel or moving around.

Barry DeGregorio criticism of NASA

Ignoring the sensationalism of the title of the above article, Barry DeGregorio has apparently issued a statement saying the MSL team was remiss in not examining the "bumps" at the Curiosity site in greater detail.

One of today's releases

Broken rock showing wetted subsurface. Look at water stain near centre of image. Original image cropped an processed to highlight the "stained" areas.
