i recently came across this picture (http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/curiosity-mars-drill-6-130208.jpg) and became curious as to what actually took the picture of the rover, i thought it was just the rover that was up there or is there another vehicle along side it that will have taken this picture? thanks

The rover can move the cam around and take picture of parts of itself, the the image can be combined and then you have a pic of the whole rover. Selfies From Mars.

I gotta say those engineers are a smart bunch. Thanks for the link. I understand now. What I don't understand is, why did they do it? Had to take a gang of PRECIOUS time to develop and send the commands.
