Soil flowing over and down a rock face almost like a liquid. The soil looks "loamy."

On the right, an exposed vertical section. A chance to what is underneath.

Here are the pancam 3D pairs from sol 3103 to 3107, including this peculiar one:

Parallel-eye stereo. The rocks look like conglomerates with rounded pebble inclusions. The smooth sand areas look like the remains of a stream.

Specular reflection from a rock at the upper right.

Signs of intelligence ahead?

Opportunity sol 3110 ( Oct 23, 2012 ) 180 degree panorama looking north after a 35 meter drive south:

with a link to the 180 pan looking south. Notice Oppy's track all the way back to Whitewater Lake.

Well, that was a surprise. What exactly is Oppy doing? A walkabout?

Reply 66: Walkabout is correct, or "drive around the loop" as they call it. See what's there before zeroing in on the most interesting outcrops.

This closeup can be seen in color in Horton's 3D pairs.

It looks like something has sheared off the tops of the rocks and also carved some canyons between rocks. The only thing I can think of would be glaciers. If there were glaciers around here, they might have produced meltwater that might explain some of the other features.

Here is the sol 3107 traverse map. Oppy was about 35 meters further south on 3110 and today, sol 3112, is a driving day. After today's drive the sol 2751 targets of Fairview and Havelock should be close. Also one ( Earth ) year old rover tracks should be in sight.

sol 3112 (Oct 25, 2012 ) 3x1 R0 pan after 25 m drive:

I think the rock above the high gain antenna is the back of the rock Fairview photographed on sol 2753.

Sol 3112 guestimated map location;

based on a parallax measurement of 40 meters to the 10 meter crater ahead and 16 meters to the top of the outcrop 27 degrees to the right of the right edge of the crater.

Here is the sol 3112 ( Oct 25, 2012 ) 180 pan looking west:

and here is the sol 2751 ( Oct 20, 2011 ) 180 pan looking east:

I now think that the Fairview feature is the highest rock outcrop on the center left of the sol 3112 pan ( center right in the sol 2751 pan ).

Also, I now think that Oppy is about 20 meters from the sol 2751 position - but is not high enough to see last year's tracks.

sol 3112 180 pan looking east:

and here are the sol 3112 false color 3D pairs taken at the sol 3110 position before the move.

Today ( sol 3114 ) is another driving day - after a couple of pans of the current rocks.

My guess is Oppy will head south towards the 10 meter crater about 35 meters ahead.

Sol 3114 ( Oct 27, 2012 ) 3x1 L0 pan after 7 meter drive to the next science target:

with links to the hazcan 3D view of the next science target - which has a link to the sol 3112 view of the target.

Well.

That was a surprise. Oppy didn't go south towards the 10 meter crater as I expected - it went north to a target that did not have any detail pancam views posted yet from sol 3112.

After 8 years I still don't have a clue about the thought processes of the MER team. I guess that means I don't think geologically.

Ah well - I can make pretty pictures. Right?

sol 3114 (Oct 27, 2012 ) 2x1 R0 close pan of next science target:

What is really strange is that the two pans taken before the move - McCrady and McKim:

do not include the rock just in front of the rover. ( Although part of the rock in the upper right close pan is in the upper left of the McKim pan )

How was this target selected? Did someone throw a dart at a map of the area to decide the next science target? If the name given the area is Lucky Lake (which happens to be near McKenny Va!) - then we will know.

Doesn't the soil here look moist and muddy? Especially near the small dark rock.

It certainly looks that way. The below image was taken by the Spirit Rover, as a comparison.

Looks like the edges of the rocks have been filed down, like nails with a nail file.
