Martian Mudflows

Proposes that Martian gullies are carved by mud flows rather than by water.

Mud without water is dust. Water is still needed. Next thing you know they will be guessing the viscosity.

And yes Mars can get a little muddy.

Interesting article (december 2009) about retrogressive thaw slumps and thermokarst on Mars (Athabasca Valles)

This environment must have functioned after the enormous floods that carved the outflow channel had abated and the ground had frozen to considerable depth. So, it is probable that in the geologically recent past there was standing water, generated by the thaw of ground ice, in the shallow basins and water flowing through the channels that led away from thawing ground ice exposed in the scarp head walls.

Fascinating, and I bet a lot(at least some) of that water is still there, underground.

And findings from UCL released today to further back this theory up:

Reply 4 :

As discussed in Methane Mystery Deepens thread it is thought there are vast amounts of frozen water ice under the surface, Phoenix showed there certainly is and not too far down either.

Remember this picture of what appears to be water flowing in a Mars crater, look how far down the crater wall it emerges, it is way below the surface.

WOW! WOW! WOW
THANKS KEVIN

I don't see how it can be anything BUT flowing water.

Yes nice links Kevin, sooner or later mainstream scientists had to stumble across the many evidence of recent liquid (water) effects in the HiRISE footage.

More to come i say Very Happy

Well,,,as per the name of this thread"Muddy Mars" I have wondered for a while what this MUD is made up of.
1.Soil,of course,meaning,moisture and solid mix.
2.But of what constituents? (link any-one,)
So,,,,Mars Mud IS,(Scamander Crater for example)
1.At one time is a crust.
2.At one time is gummy.
3.At one time becomes sandy,almost,fines?
4.Currently I read this is a venting location.(is venting a warming event?)
5.(I wish) Put that Pan Camera on the center of this pit.
6.And leave it there.
7.Lets observe what soil changes we can get to with the lens being used to look at the rat holes on Marquett.
If Spirit's escape plans can be set aside a few days, then perhaps a little soil science
could be added.
I would think it would be in the interest of the Mars community to observe,if possible "Muddy Mars"

Lets not use up all its remaining days trying to gain .05mm forward.
Please,We talked about this months ago,and still, nothing (or very little) (link anyone?) known or shown about the make-up of the hole we are part way onto.

Winter is coming on Mars.Solar angle is a must. It's going to take a huge amount of power just keeping warm,if more were known about the soil there might be an educated guess as to whether their might be a plus/minus to the body box heat.

IS the blue in Horticolour = water escaping?probably.(spirit's first attempt)

What can we learn here?
The camera is a great tool.
j.
