a small excerpt taken from Mars Daily Nov 2, 2009...
'This week, an independent panel of robotics experts has been reviewing the rover team's tests and plans for getting Spirit away from the site called "Troy," where the rover's wheels broke through a crusty, dark surface layer and became embedded in bright, loose material that had been hidden underneath.
Spirit has worked on Mars for more than 69 months in what was originally planned as a three-month mission.'
Well, if the 'engineers' [playing with thing since April '09] would use the arm of Spirit as a boom and weight overhead, load one side of the rover until ready to tip then spin the wheels on the weighted side to perhaps move it out of its hole. A rocking action may do it with spinning tires.
Folks in the 'cold' North do it all the time when a car [far heavier than wee Spirit] gets caught in a snow bank with belly held by packed snow and re-froze melting ice from the exhaust system!!! Rocking action always gets it going for full momentum back onto the road. Just have to make sure your arms and legs are out of the way when it hits the pavement spinning!!! LOL
